Learning like a sponge

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Last night Lauren finally mastered the trike. She’s been doing little bits here and there – a few feet, then getting frustrated or not able to push the right pedal down. Last night she rode her bike from our house to “the blue lights” (a fountain with runway-esque blue lights around it) and home again, with help only when I insisted on holding the parent pushbar thing to cross streets. She biked about a mile.

This morning she’s mastered lacing beads. Last night she was making bead towers (my beads are spheres, cubes, and cylinders) with them, some 15 or more “blocks” high, and I showed her what the laces in the box were for. Today she is wearing her first necklace made from 1″ wooden beads.

Elliot looks different to me today. Not sure what is different, but he is. And I’m feeling really calm and peaceful. I think having spent the last 3 weeks as a family has really helped. Ryan has been going back to Ohio so much on the weekends to work on the house, and being mom all day while he works, and all night, and then being a single parent on the weekends has really gotten me stressed. 3 weekends ago we were in Ohio, last weekend he stayed here, and this weekend he was on-call, so he had to stay again. Next weekend my friend Liz and I are going to team up with our husbands out of town. Her son is a few months younger than Lauren, and her #2 is due at the beginning of October. Her husband is going to visit friends, and Ryan is going to Ohio.

Or tubeworm. Ryan’s been chasing Lauren around and trying to kiss or swallow her whole, depending on your perspective.

This picture was taken by a mom on one of my email groups here in Chicago. She had to look for the best stickers from other bunches of bananas before buying them in the store. ;)

Here’s the link to give her proper credit:

Elliot is 19lbs and a few ounces big.

Lauren is 30 lbs. I think he will weigh more than her pretty soon.

USPS brings good stuff.

Tonight when I got home from my LLL meeting, Lauren was still awake. I brought the mail up with me – well there was a package from my friend in HI stuffed in my mailbox (grrr we have some bad mailmen), and I handed it to her still taped shut.

Her reaction? “Wow mommy, for me? THANK YOU, It’s the BEST present EVER!!”

It’s still taped shut and on the floor somewhere.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything here. The kids are doing well, Lauren is VERY much a two year old, and Elliot is just so much fun!

At the end of July we met up with a bunch of our online friends (yes, the people my mother warns me about.. the ones who will bodychop me and steal my babies..) and we had a blast. See mom, the internet isn’t all about big 400 lb men named Stan who sit around pretending to be women on the internet!

Lauren had a BLAST playing with the boys, she’s just a week or two younger than the oldest ones, and almost a year older than the youngest ones.

The weekend before that Elliot and I attended the La Leche League International conference here in Chicago. It was one exhausting weekend.. we had our friend Laura from Boston come to visit as well, and we were downtown from early in the morning until late each day, riding the bus back and forth, and being mom AND learning all that great information was just too much for me to handle, my brain went into serious overload and I still wake up in the middle of the night going “A-HA!” over something I learned.
