Garbanzo Beans

Here’s a little known tidbit that I learned – garbanzo beans (chick peas) are so closely related to soy that the protein in them is almost identical, and people who are allergic to soy have a 95% chance of reacting to garbanzo beans too. And I’m sure Lauren is part of that 95%.

I went out to Aladdin’s in Lakewood and ate a meal with a friend that I knew was dairy and soy free, yet Lauren had the same reaction as she does to soy – red diaper rash with sores. Poor baby. So I blamed the pita bread as I’ve seen some pita made with soy flour.

Then I made my own hummus about a month ago, and it was the only thing different in my diet that week. It was pretty good stuff too! Lauren reacted the same way, and I was bummed, but not willing to admit she reacted to the beans.

This week on one of my email lists (the EC list) someone mentioned that garbanzo beans are nearly soy beans in disguise. It all *clicked* and made sense. And now I know that I can eat at Aladdin’s (and Nate’s deli!) as long as I don’t have the hummus.
